My Favorite Pulses & How I Use Them
I’ve been experimenting with different types of pulses, and here are a few of my favorites:
1. Lentils (Dal)
Lentils are my absolute go-to. They cook quickly and are incredibly versatile. I use them to make dal, soups, and even lentil burgers. They’re also a great source of iron, which is a bonus for someone like me who’s always looking to boost my energy levels.
2. Chickpeas (Chana)
Chickpeas are another staple in my kitchen. I love making hummus, chana masala, or just roasting them for a crunchy snack. They’re high in protein and fiber, making them super filling.
3. Black Beans
Black beans are my secret weapon for adding protein to salads and wraps. They’re also great in Mexican dishes like tacos and burritos. Plus, they’re rich in antioxidants, which is always a win.
4. Kidney Beans (Rajma)
Rajma is one of my comfort foods. I make a big pot of rajma curry on weekends, and it lasts me for days. Kidney beans are not only delicious but also packed with protein and fiber.
One of the things I love most about pulses is how easy they are to incorporate into your diet. You don’t need to be a master chef to cook with them. Here are a few simple ways I use pulses:
And the best part? Pulses are incredibly affordable. A bag of lentils or beans costs just a few dollars and can be used in multiple meals.
Did you know that pairing pulses with grains (like rice or millets) creates a complete protein? This means you get all the essential amino acids your body needs. For example, dal with rice or hummus with whole-grain pita is not only delicious but also nutritionally balanced.
Pulses have become a non-negotiable part of my diet, and I can’t recommend them enough. They’re nutritious, versatile, and sustainable—everything you could want in a food. Whether you’re looking to build muscle, lose weight, or just eat healthier, pulses are a fantastic choice.
So, the next time you’re planning your meals, don’t forget to add a handful of lentils, chickpeas, or beans. Your body (and your wallet) will thank you!
